Betsy & Peter Spann
Owners/Operators - Spann Vineyards
Betsy and Peter started their love affair with grapes and wine early in life. For Betsy it began in high school when her family moved to Bordeaux and she was given the chore of tasting through wines at the local market to select one for dinner each evening. She returned to California for college and worked in a wine shop, then started her own stores and continued to taste and select the best wines.
With her degree in chemistry, a keenly developed palate and a yearning to make her own wines, she joined a partnership to start Lake Sonoma Winery in the Dry Creek Valley in 1985. After a few years she sold her interest to move into sales for a wine importer.
Peter Spann started working with the dozen grapevines in his family’s backyard when he was eight. While waiting tables in a French restaurant during college he became infatuated with classic French wines and food. After graduation he ventured through all levels of the wine business; retail, wholesale, importing and marketing, pursuits that took him through the world’s greatest wine regions. During a brief stint as a cellar rat at a small Napa Valley winery in 1985 he was bitten by the winemaking bug.
Betsy and Peter met in 1996, married in 1998, bought a vineyard near the top of the Mayacamas Mountains in Sonoma Valley in 2000 and started making wine together the next year. They produce unique grape variety blends, built on the European model of complexity, balance, full flavor and elegance. These are available through their tasting lounge in Kenwood, California and select fine wine shops.
